David McDonnell, Chief Executive Officer of Grant Thornton International, the global accounting organisation, has been appointed as the High Sheriff of Merseyside for one year with effect from 8 April 2009.
This is a prestigious honour for David and one which recognises the considerable contribution he has made to the Merseyside community over many years. Despite working from a London base for the last 20 years, he and his family continue to live on Merseyside and to strengthen their ties to the local community. During this period he has, amongst other activities, served as Chairman of the Merseyside Society for Deaf People, Chairman of National Museums Liverpool (formerly known as National Museums & Galleries Merseyside) and he is currently serving as President of the Council of the University of Liverpool.
David said, "I look forward to an enjoyable year as High Sheriff. I very much hope, during this time, to make a further worthwhile contribution to the life of Merseyside."
The Office of High Sheriff is the oldest continuous secular Office under the Crown and, whilst today the role is largely ceremonial, there continues to be a strong link with the Judiciary in particular and with a wide range of local institutions.
